Hi bombmom, without knowing the rest of your programme and your goals I can only make a very general suggestion. Try deadlifting once a week and sticking to around 3 sets of 8-10 reps to learn the lift and practice technique.

After warming up and perhaps practising with an empty olympic bar (20kg) you could start at 40kg and see how you go from there.

Bear in mind that the starting height of the bar on the floor is where it would be if you had 45lb/20kg plates on it, so if you have smaller plates or no plates at all, try to bring the bar up to the right height by resting it on a box or a small pile of weight plates.

If you have access to bumper plates which are all the same diameter then you won't have this problem!

@ An Ho: Oh dear, not a very swift response from me. Apologies, I must have missed this comment.

When I deadlift, I take a big breath just before I lift, and hold it throughout the lift. Sometimes I start breathing out once I have lowered the bar past my knees.

Check out step 2 and step 5 in the article above, where I talk about breathing.
