Check out this interview with John Berardi, nutrition expert, on Canadian TV. He is there to plug his books, but that’s not why the interview is interesting. I like it because he manages to boil down the essential concepts in a simple but palatable way. He explains why it is good to start and keep strength training, why metabolism is a key factor in weight control and the place of cardio in the mix.

For many of you, these arguments will be familiar, but if there’s anyone else in your life that still needs persuading, it is useful to see how Berardi puts the case. He manages to bypass the whole issue of the scales completely by focussing on metabolism instead of weight. He also talks about “preserving muscle mass” rather than “building muscle” which might be more palatable for female trainees worried about getting too muscular.

Yes, I thought the five hours advice was interesting, although of course it depends on how well you spend those five hours
