[...] You know those odd stories that crop up in the news every now and again: ‘Woman lifts car to free trapped child’? Type that into Google and you will see hundreds of them. People (you!) have super human strength and they don’t realise it because they don’t know how to access it. (If you want to know more about why these strange feats happen, read this article).
Cheers Bonnie! I often feel the same way as I train with guys and it can be rather dispiriting comparing my lifts to theirs. So keeping in mind the relative strength concept does make me feel better (on squat and deadlift anyway).

Great post! Thanks for pointing out that smaller athletes often have a higher strength to size ratio. For too long, I've been sorry that I'm small, because I feel like I'll never lift as much weight as people who have more leverage. It's time for me to stop feeling sorry for myself. I just need to keep working to maximize my relative strength! :-)

Cheers Fred! Yes, Starting Strength is a great book. It is mainly focussed on exercise technique (at which it excels) whereas Practical Programming deals with the basic concepts in strength and programming issues.

Terrific post...great points about muscle size and neurological efficiency in relation to overall strength. I've just recently started to lift 'heavier' than before (for me) and I'm seeing definite gains in strength.

Another good book by Mark Rippetoe is "Starting Strength"...

I have to agree with "Deb' above...you're blog is awesome...for men and women! Thanks!
