@ Colette: completely agree, changes should be at the level of lifestyle not just what you do for 12 weeks.

@ gethotabs: looking at the Man in the Mirror, eh?! (sorry couldn't resist topical joke...). You are right though, and I think many people go on this journey.

"Focus must be on yourself and how you want yourself to look. Don’t picture a celebrity, picture a better version of yourself."

Totally agree with this one. When I decided I needed a serious toning, I started to look which person will I be molding my body after some 2 years of work in the gym. I choose among Ryan Reynolds, Chaning Tatum, Aerosmith(just joking) and other fit celebrities, then I realize these lads have their private instructors and their food were carefully selected for optimum results and heck, I couldn't afford that so before I knew it, the answer lies in the mirror. I just needed to be a better me...

What a great article! Like Oprah always says, looved it! Hehe! Anyway! What i want to say.. I'm from South Africa, and here, if you have enough money, you can have bloodtests done and get an individualised diet based on your specific needs. And it's not really a diet. It's a lifestyle. Because u change your way of viewing things, ur perception, and u go from there. Also, fresh food really is the best way to go. It's nutrition from mother nature. Why mess with perfection? God know's best. (added by Mobile using Mippin)

@ Kira: yes, me too!

@ Rolfe: interesting observation, that anything that comes in a box is suspect. Probably a good rule of thumb!

Superb article reminds me of this Bruce Lee quote:

"Learn the principle, abide by the principle, and dissolve the principle. In short, enter a mold without being caged in it. Obey the principle without being bound by it. LEARN, MASTER AND ACHIEVE!!!"

I firmly believe the media focus on celebreties is a disaster for the western world. This focus have given us several generations of unhealthy ideals just for the reasons Gubernatrix gave in this post.

I dont believe in individual workouts or diets for "ordinary people". Certainly there are individual differences but I think you have to be on a pretty high level for these differences to justify individual diets and programs. I am thinking olympic/worlds and e.g. controlled one arm handstands as goals to justify individual diets and programs.
When that has been said. I do believe there are many very good reasons to get a healthy diet. For a bodybuilder I heard that diet was 80% and training 20% of the effort. I dont know if it is correct, but I would not be surprised if it was. Eating healthy is just incredibly hard today. There is so much contradictionary information available that it is very easy to get mislead. In addition we have large commercial interests with their own agendas and budgets pushing on scientists, politicians and ordinary people. What we eat is not healthy! Gubernatrix mentioned reading on the boxes and wrappers what the product really contains, but that is not enough in my opinion. Anything that is wrapped, in a box or otherwise man-made is suspect. Meats, fish, eggs, fruits and vegetables is what we should eat. Water is what we should drink. Not cans of "I want to get fat" sodas or artifically flavoured water. Make your food from raw materials, the rest is crap in boxes, made by corporations to earn more money. Just look at how margarine is made and what it is made of. It is just gross. Why on earth do we eat something like that, and it is not the only reason. How many butchers eat sausages from any large processing company?

I think people want to eat healthy, but the good information drowns in all the bad.

Yes, I am a fresh convert from regular the "western diet" and full of zeal when it comes to nutrition. :-D
