the joy of strength training

Hi folks,

The sun is shining, training is going well and I have loads of new DVDs so I’m happy! Hope you are too.

New Dan John DVDs now available!

I am stoked to announce that I am now selling Dan John’s DVDs in the Gubernatrix shop. I’ve just spent the weekend watching them (again and again) and my reviews are here:

Suffice to say, I love ‘em both. People like Dan John just keep it real for me and help me understand where training fits in my life and what it means long term. This is more valuable to me than any one programme or goal.

Everything’s Over My Head is an older DVD. A Philosophy of Strength Training is new this year. It is actually part one of four. The second DVD (on kettlebell training) has just come out and I believe all four will be available in November.

Depending on levels of interest, I may get the other DVDs in stock as they are released, or wait until November and get the lot (I’ll save a bit on freight). It depends on demand and customer feedback – I’ll keep you guys updated.

Don’t forget, Dan John is coming to Ireland this Christmas to do a 2-day seminar. Let Dan Fouts (dan@informedperformance.com) know if you are interested (and do mention that you saw it in my newsletter, if you don’t mind). Although I’d rather have him all to myself, the more people who come to these seminars, the more likely it is that similar events can happen in the future.

Strength & Power Invitational
hosted by Crossfit Reading and FK.UK
21st November

Remember I mentioned some strongman events in the last newsletter? Well some of the group were so inspired by those – heck, by strength training in general – that they said, “Hey kids, let’s put on a show!”

So there is a strength and power invitational on 21st November near Reading, UK. The idea is to test raw strength and power but also to get together and have some fun. This is what we all train for, right?

Everyone is welcome, whether as a competitor or a spectator (provided you can make it to the south east of the UK on the day – sorry to my readers overseas). We especially look forward to meeting some new faces as well as getting old friends to come out and play.

The disciplines are:

Deadlift
Press
Vehicle Pull
Overhead Throw
Heavy Medley
…and a surprise

These may be for reps, load, time or distance! The details are deliberately being kept under wraps until the day, so be prepared for anything.

Athletes will be split by sex and then into 3 weight classes:

Men: sub 75kg, 75-90kg, 90kg+
Women: sub 55kg, 55-65kg, 65kg+

Here are the details:

Date: Saturday 21st November 2009
(Registration cut off:  Sunday 8th November)
Time: 1000 weigh-in for 1100 start
Location: Tadley RFC, Red Lane, Aldermaston, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 4PA
Athlete Entry Fee: £6

Get your place reserved soon as possible to avoid disappointment. To reserve your place email chet@funckey.co.uk AND mail@crossfitreading.co.uk with your name, sex, and weight in kg. They will then send you payment details. It would be great if you could mention that you saw this event in my newsletter.

Event reminder

A quick reminder of the Crossfit Reading workshops happening in the next couple of months:

  • Olympic lifting – 25th October, Theale, near Reading
  • Kettlebells – 8th November, Theale, near Reading

At £30 a pop for each workshop, these are a bargin. More details here.

World of Gubes

My training is going reasonably well for the World Drug Free Powerlifting Championships in November and now the Crossfit Reading/FKUK Strength & Power Invitational which is the week after – yikes! I have been having physio for a rotator cuff injury but the rehab is working.

I’m also moving to London in a few weeks’ time. Yep, leaving my beautiful little corner of Cornwall for the big smoke. I’m looking forward to catching up with friends, checking out the new Crossfit London box which is looking fabulous, and playing on the monolift at Genesis.

New videos from Gubernatrix

I’m doing the 20 pullups programme on my off days and here are the halfway results:
